More about Alresford Country Market

The Market reached its 30th anniversary at the beginning of November 2010. The first Market was held on November 6th 1980, and we celebrated the first thirty years on Thursday November 4th 2010.

Helping the environment: Buying locally produced goods means that there are very few food-miles incurred in buying them (our nearest producer is less than 100 yards from the Community Centre!) Our producers themselves are trying to work in as environmentally responsible way as possible. We try to source ingredients locally or within Britain, we try to raise plants without the use of insecticides or artificial fertilisers wherever possible, and we recycle jam jars and flower pots both to save on world resources and to keep the prices down to you, the customer – and you can help too by bringing back jam jars, flower pots and egg boxes for re-use.

Bags
Alresford is a plastic-bag-free zone, so we do not give out plastic bags unless they are needed. You can bring your own bags, or buy one of our big carriers – but we will not leave you to struggle for want of a bag.

We need jam jars!
Every year we clean and reuse around 5000 jam and honey jars. Reusing jars is even better than recycling them! We are pleased to receive any 8 ounce (212 ml), 12 ounce (around 290 ml) or pound (370 ml) jars, and honey jars. Most are reusable, but if they are not suitable for any reason then we will recycle them in the normal way.

Could I become a producer? Yes! If you are producing any of the products in the list above, or something that might be added to our range, and you are prepared to take part in the cooperative, then come and see us on a Thursday morning, or phone Geoff Pilliner on 01962 773472
